As we approach the end of the year what feelings come up for you? Would you say it was a successful year? Did you grow or are you dreading what next year will bring? For most New Years’ resolutions don’t last long. So how can this year be different?

Here are five ways to set yourself up to win:

#1 What’s your Vision?

Get Clear on What You Want. What do you want to accomplish? What do you want to see change? What is holding you back? What would bring you happiness? Go deep. Once you have identified your vision write it out in detail or better yet create a vision board. Displaying your vision will help you to purposely focus on your goals for the year.

#2 Change your Perspective:

Do you spend more time counting your losses vs. your wins? If you answered yes you are not alone. So how do we change our perspective? We do this by intentionally practicing gratitude. We focus on the positives versus the negatives. We make the choice to focus on what is good in our lives and be thankful for it.

#3 Stay Present:

The pull of social media and technology can make it almost impossible to stay focused on any one thing. How often have we missed an opportunity to connect with our children, spouse or even just an experience? Is it possible that you are missing out? Make a decision to shut down the distractions. Change your outlook; you don’t always have to be connected. Slow down, be present and enjoy the important things in life as they won’t last forever.

#4 Let it Go!

Of whatever failure you may have had this past year. There is nothing that you can do about it so decide to stop looking back and start looking ahead. I know it sounds easier said than done but often times requires forgiving those whom have hurt you or even yourself for any mistakes you made. Trust that through those failures you have grown and are now wiser. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a fresh start?

#5 Make a Declaration:

Find a word to describe you next year. Perhaps it’s Renewed or Unshakeable; maybe it’s as simple as Happy. What is your word? Choice it and then put it somewhere or everywhere so you will be reminded daily.


Most of us roll into one year from the other without any intention or purpose and then we’re disappointed when nothing changes.
